Ghana Studies Submissions Guidelines

The editors welcome submissions for potential publication in Ghana Studies. Submissions should be between 7,000 and 10,000 words in length (including notes), should reflect original research about Ghana, and should not be under consideration elsewhere. Submissions from all disciplines will be considered, but all manuscripts should be written with a general scholarly audience in mind; clarity of expression is of utmost importance and authors must avoid unnecessary discipline-specific jargon and shorthand.

Manuscripts of interest could include, but are not limited to, topics such as:

  • Social movements and change
  • Questions of inequality
  • Oral history and Ghanaian sources
  • The Arts in society
  • Work and labor
  • Religion and everyday life
  • Questions of development
  • Ghana and the wider world

All submissions must follow either APA style or the Chicago Manual of Style (but not both, please). Bibliographies are required for APA style but not for Chicago style (i.e. footnote style). Archival material should be fully identified either in footnotes or an endnote, sufficient to enable other scholars to locate the material independently. Please provide an abstract, list of key words to associate with the article, and a one- or two-sentence bio for each author. Please provide the author’s affiliation within each bio.

Submissions should be in the form of a .doc or .docx file, include minimal formatting, be left-justified only, use Times New Roman 12-point font for text and 10-point font for any footnotes, and use Unicode symbols for any letters of the Akan alphabet or other alphabets that are not adequately represented by English letters. Do not insert any manual formatting (tabs, extra line spacing, etc.) for bibliographies or footnotes and do not use section breaks in the main text.

Please direct your submissions to the editors at: editors.ghanastudies@gmail.com

All submissions are reviewed by the editors and by anonymous peers. Please include accurate, up-to-date contact information, including institutional affiliation (if any) and current email address, so that we may be in touch with you about your submission.

Publishing Fees

We accept publishing fees for Gold Open Access, color section fees, and page fees. Page fees are requested when a research grant or other institutional funds are available to underwrite publication costs. Ability to pay is not a condition for acceptance of a manuscript. To pay online, please go to: https://charge.wisc.edu/uwpress/PublishingFees.aspx or email journals@uwpress.wisc.edu for assistance.
