Popular Culture
An Introductory Text
Edited by Jack Nachbar and Kevin Lause
Critics and fans of American popular culture continue to be engaged in a hot debate over the actual societal value that popular culture provides. Both sides agree, however, that this phenomenon is ubiquitous and therefore needs to be taken seriously. Popular Culture: An Introductory Text is a key that is meant to unlock the door of serious popular culture analysis. While most books about popular culture are studies of popular media, this book presents methods and examples for studying the entire breadth of this vast subject.
Popular Culture: An Introductory Text provides the means for a new examination of the different faces of the American character in both its historical and contemporary identities. The text is highlighted by a series of extensive introductions to various categories of popular culture and by over twenty-five illustrative essays that demonstrate how the methods discussed in the introductions can be applied. From horror movies to rap, from telephones to television soaps, this volume is an exciting beginning for the study of the materials of everyday life that define our culture and confirm our individual senses of identity.
