Adapting Contemporary American Fiction by Women to Film

Historically, Hollywood has turned to literature for its story ideas, and fiction by women has provided some of the most interesting sources. Fiction by American women has both afforded insights into American society and character and given producers and directors a wealth of filmable material.
The essays in Vision/Re-Vision analyze in detail ten important films adapted from contemporary American fiction by women, addressing the ways in which the writers' latent or overt feminist messages are reinterpreted by the filmmakers who bring them to the screen. Films include: Accidental Tourist, Heartburn, Ordinary People, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, Housekeeping, The Women of Brewster Place, In Country, The Joy Luck Club, and Interview with the Vampire.
