Ecological Restoration is a forum for people advancing the science and practice of restoration ecology. It is an applied science journal featuring the technical and ecological aspects of restoring habitats, as well as collaborations between restorationists and other professions (e.g., fire and water managers, engineers, and architects), land-use policy, the role of education, and more.

This quarterly publication includes peer-reviewed science articles, perspectives and notes, book reviews, abstracts of restoration ecology progress published elsewhere, and announcements of scientific and professional meetings.

Ecological Restoration is an official partner journal of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER).

Join Our Community of Manuscript Reviewers

We are a peer-reviewed journal and every submission receives a careful evaluation from knowledgeable scientists or practitioners of restoration. As our field grows and the number of submissions rises, we have an urgent need for more manuscript reviewers. We particularly need specialists in grassland ecology, coastal ecology, and soil processes, but welcome new partners from any area of restoration.

Call for Papers

Ecological Restoration seeks applied science manuscripts across its unique range of article types: Research Articles reporting original research; Restoration Notes reporting smaller studies or innovative technical developments and concepts; Case Studies presenting lessons learned from a particular project, location, or topical analysis; Perspectives that analyze and advance approaches or new ideas in restoration; Status of Knowledge Reviews which synthesize data on topics of broad interest in restoration or restoration efforts in particular regions; and Practitioner Highlights which showcase achievements of influential restorationists or groups. The editor, Scott Abella, is also looking for opportunities for Themed Sections bringing together submissions of 2-6 manuscripts organized around particular restoration topics or regions. Please see the submission guidelines section and recent editorials in 2024 in issue 42(3) and in 2025 in 43(2) and 43(3) for discussion of new article types added to the journal as well as articles connecting natural history with restoration. For more information or questions on manuscript suitability, contact the editorial staff at ERjournal@uwpress.wisc.edu.
