Creating Adobe Acrobat PDF Files

When creating PDF format files for publication in UW Press Journals, all raster-based graphics (i.e. photos, scans, etc.) must be at least 300 dpi at reproduction size. Please check that the settings for PDF export or Adobe Acrobat Distiller are set so as not to downsample to less than 300 dpi. Also make sure that all fonts are set to be embedded. Using the default “Press Quality” settings should produce the desired results.

Some of the graphics programs that support PDF format export are: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Quark 5.0 or later, Adobe/Macromedia FreeHand, Adobe Pagemaker 7 (Distiller is on the original installation CD as an install option, and requires the Postscript/Distiller two-step procedure described below for Quark 4.x).

If at all possible, PDF should be created from electronic files, NOT scans.

Quark Xpress
Quark
versions 5.x, 6.x, and 7.x have “PDF Export” built into them so PDF files can be created within the application. Quark 4.x users must obtain and use Adobe Acrobat Distiller separately, for example, by purchasing and installing the full version of Adobe Acrobat Professional or Standard. You then go through a two-stage process of creating a Postscript file first (with fonts embedded), then converting that into a PDF file from within Distiller. PDF format has become a standard in the printing industry, and if you plan to produce a number of ads for print media, it would be well worth obtaining the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Professional or Adobe Acrobat Standard.

A Word on Word
Please do not provide ads produced with Microsoft Word. Although a highly competent word processor, Microsoft Word is not a graphics program. It is not suitable for preparing ads for professional printing.

Scanning Photos
Before placing photographic images in your document, make sure you scan them at 300dpi at reproduction size (the size they will appear in your ad). We recommend TIF format files for incorporating into your ad later.
